Artificial intelligence is the set of technologies that seeks to emulate the qualities and capabilities of the mind. The term is applicable when some machinery or equipment develops the cognitive abilities that describe the human intellect, such as learning, memory and problem solving.

This technology is developed through mathematical algorithms that organize and interpret all kinds of data, to later obtain information on human behavior and from the conclusions derived from it, solve problems or generate predictions about any problem.

Currently, due to the multiple applications of artificial intelligence , it is expected that it will produce a revolution comparable to the one triggered by the use of the Internet.

Artificial intelligence has many applications for different industries, some of the examples that can be considered are:

Education. There are systems of this type that are very helpful for language learning.

Telecommunications. AI is present in the facial detection systems of mobile devices, in virtual assistants such as Siri, Alexa or Cortana.

Marketing and trade. In this case, AI systems allow the recommendation of related or complementary products within an e-commerce.

Medicine . It can be helpful to optimize the use of resources, as well as to make better decisions for the benefit of patients.

Finance. In this area, AI makes it easier for banking institutions to detect fraud, understand and predict patterns of market behavior and suggest certain types of financial operations to their customers.

Logistics and transportation. It allows to optimize the traffic in all types of shipments , in addition to helping to prevent accidents and avoid road congestion.

  • Insufficient trained professionals to operate the new systems.
  • Invasion of privacy.
  • High cost development.

Artificial intelligence: a modern approach

In the book, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach by Stuart Russell and Peter Norving, artificial intelligence is classified into four types:

  1. Systems that think like humans. They dominate processes such as learning, decision making and problem solving. Examples of these systems are artificial neural networks.
  2. Systems that act like humans. These are robotic systems that mimic human behavior.
  3. Systems that think rationally. They perceive, reason and act similarly to how a human being would.
  4. Systems that act rationally . In this category all the objects that act in accordance with human logic are grouped.

Given the different applications of artificial intelligence for the future, it is essential that a professional can count on the knowledge and education that allows him to use and manipulate the technological systems and tools that will be key in the future.
