The electronic health card

The electronic health card replaces the former health insurance card.

The essentials in brief:

  • Only the electronic health cards are valid as proof of insurance for those with statutory health insurance.
  • The card contains the insured person's master data.
  • Insured persons can also have an electronic medication plan and emergency data saved on the electronic health card.
In the future, all health insurance companies will issue the electronic health card (eGK) with NFC technology. NFC stands for "Near Field Communication" and means that data can be exchanged without contact

What data is stored on the electronic health card?

The electronic health card can be recognized primarily by the photo of the insured person. This is to prevent unauthorized persons from improperly using medical services.

As a policyholder, you are generally obliged to provide your health insurance company with a photo. If you don't have a current photo to hand, ask your health insurance company whether you can send the photo by e-mail, for example, or whether there is the possibility of taking a photo free of charge at the health insurance company's branches.

Children under the age of 15 and insured persons who cannot participate in the creation of a photo, for example people who are bedridden and people in closed institutions, do not need a photo on their electronic health card. Affected insured persons or their relatives should contact their health insurance company.

Only the so-called insured master data is stored on the card:

  • name and address
  • Date of birth
  • gender
  • health insurance number
  • insured status
  • Beginning and, if applicable, expiry of the insurance cover

The European health insurance card is printed on the back . This applies to illness in all 28 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Also in Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Croatia. The German Liaison Office for Health Insurance Abroad offers a country overview .

If you visit your doctor and do not have the electronic health card with you or your old card is not accepted, treatment can still be carried out.

You can then submit a valid proof of insurance within ten days. The doctor can then bill you privately for his services. But even then you will get the money back if you can prove your membership with a statutory health insurance company by the end of the quarter.

Optional functions on the electronic health card

Electronic Medication Plan

If you permanently take more than three medicines that are covered by statutory health insurance, you are entitled to a medication plan. The medication plan lists your medication and the dosage and application. Previously, the prescribing doctor could only create the medication plan in paper form.

Now you can save your medication plan in electronic form on your health card and have it with you every time you visit the doctor.

The e-medication plan helps treating physicians to keep track of their medication. Interactions with individual drugs can be better recognized and avoided.

You can also have non-prescription medicines saved by your pharmacist in the electronic medication plan.

Do I have to have the e-medication plan saved on my health card?

Doctors, dentists and pharmacists can save the e-medication plan directly on the health card - provided the patient expressly requests this and agrees to the storage.

E-medication plan data includes:

  • Patient master data, such as name, address and date of birth
  • Medication-relevant data, such as allergies and intolerances
  • Medication information, ie all medicines a patient is taking and information on use (dose, time, frequency, etc.). This includes both medicines prescribed by the doctor or dentist and medicines purchased over the counter in pharmacies (self-medication).

The use of this function is voluntary.

Only doctors, dentists, psychotherapists, pharmacists and their employees may read the e-medication plan. You need the consent of the patient for this. The patient reads their health card into the card reader and enters their PIN. In order to be able to read or enter data on the electronic health card, the doctor must also identify himself at the card reader with his health professional card.

Emergency data record on the electronic health card

In the future, people with statutory health insurance will be able to have emergency data saved on their electronic health card. In an emergency, those affected can be better cared for with the help of this data. The insured person decides whether emergency data is stored.

Important data can be: chronic diseases, medication or allergies. Contact details or information on the organ donor card can also be stored.
