open innovation

Open innovation is here to stay. And if before there could be any doubt about its effectiveness for business and social development and growth, now, with the times, all those doubts have been cleared up.

In short, open innovation is the strategy used by large companies to avoid falling behind in the supersonic race to always be up to date. And, for this, they resort to specific alliances with small companies and research teams. The big companies 'open' the doors of their entrails and share their resources with these small companies so that they develop –in many cases, jointly– new projects from which both can benefit.

The first open innovation projects were carried out in the environment of universities and research centers. And with the crisis of the mid-2000s, the speed of innovation has accelerated enormously.

various phases

The evolution of innovation has three phases. The first is an opening to the outside. “The company is aware that it can no longer go it alone and has to begin to relate to the surrounding ecosystem to innovate with third parties. To do this, they 'set up' competitions, hackathons , events... and, generally, it culminates when they create a corporate accelerator. This first step is very important to open the company to the outside world, generate a new corporate culture, begin to find out what is going on in the world, to cool off... And let everyone know that the company is open to foreign collaboration. This phase has happened a lot in Spain since 2008 in companies and public institutions”, explains Pedro Moneo , CEO and founder of Opinno.

business orientation

A second phase of 'manual' connection. “As a response to the first phase, companies are beginning to receive many proposals from startups. That becomes an overload, both of companies that could be relevant to their interests and others that are not mature or do not have an interesting connection with the big company. At that moment, a second more discreet and analytical stage begins. It is very business oriented. Now, instead of having an internal marketing partner, they are starting to have one more business partner. Imagine that you are a bank and you want to start working with a fintech to, for example, grant P2P credits.. A very manual, point-to-point connection is established between the two, which implies that you will have to talk to the legal department to open cooperation with that startup; that data and information flow; you will have to talk to the technical department so that both platforms can talk and start exchanging content; You will have to speak with the sales and marketing department to include this new product and/or service in the portfolio that they offer abroad... There is a total integration between the two companies, but manually. Companies are trying to bring their digital products and services to market. This is the phase in which we are now in Spain”, says Moneo.

build connections

And a third phase of open platforms. “It is beginning to stand out in some companies. Just as in the first phase there was an overload of projects and in the second, several (few) companies start working with one company, it becomes saturated because it is immersed in a process that involves 'building' the connection of the platforms 'to hand' every time a company wants to collaborate with the company. And they begin to work on the development of open platforms, a kind of legal and technological protocols and development communities ( developers) so that any external company can connect easily and quickly to the core of the corporation. The idea is that all companies will end up building their own open platforms”, underlines Moneo. But, for that, there is still a little way to go.
